Jakarta, Indonesia, November 30, 2025 – Cyclonic rains have led to catastrophic floods and landslides in Sumatra, Indonesia, resulting in a rise in fatalities to 303, as reported by the head of the disaster relief agency on Saturday, adjusting from a previous count of 174. The number of displaced individuals has surged into the tens of thousands, with numerous others trapped as rescuers work in perilous circumstances.
This extreme weather event, triggered by an unusual tropical storm in the Malacca Strait, has also had severe repercussions in Malaysia and southern Thailand. Recent data from Thailand indicates that 162 lives have been lost to the severe conditions, up from 145, according to government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat.
In Sumatra, approximately 80,000 residents have been forced to evacuate, with at least 279 individuals unaccounted for across three provinces, as stated by Suharyanto, the head of Indonesia’s disaster agency. Rescue teams are deploying helicopters to deliver critical aid to remote regions in northern Sumatra, which have been isolated by landslides.
“We are working to reopen the route from North Tapanuli to Sibolga, which has been blocked for three days,” Suharyanto communicated to the press. Efforts are also underway to clear landslide debris while many remain confined and urgently need food and medical support. Additional military personnel will be mobilized on Sunday to bolster relief operations.
The Central Tapanuli region has witnessed harrowing scenes, with residents attempting to seize supplies, illustrating the dire circumstances faced by local communities. Authorities are actively managing evacuation operations, aid distribution, and medical assistance amidst extremely tough conditions.
The disastrous floods and landslides in Indonesia and Thailand highlight the severe impact of cyclones in Southeast Asia, disrupting lives, demolishing infrastructure, and leaving communities grappling with recovery. Emergency services have advised locals to stay alert as further heavy rainfall is anticipated in the upcoming days.
