On May 16, 2026, General Secretary and President To Lam delivered an impactful address at the 120th anniversary of Hanoi National University. This significant event also acknowledged the university's exceptional contributions to education and was marked by the presentation of the esteemed First-Class Labor Order.

In front of an audience of government leaders, educators, and international guests, To Lam hailed Hanoi National University as a beacon of Vietnamese academic prowess. He praised the institution's legacy in nurturing many talented individuals instrumental to Vietnam's journey towards independence and modernization.

The Vietnamese leader recounted the university's remarkable history, starting with the founding of the University of Indochina in 1906 before evolving into what is now Hanoi National University. He noted that this institution is one of Southeast Asia's earliest modern multidisciplinary universities and a pivotal element in the evolution of Vietnam’s higher education framework.

To Lam referred to the crucial role of President Ho Chi Minh's connection to the university post-independence in 1945. He highlighted Ho Chi Minh's belief that education is paramount for the development of a strong, independent nation. In this context, To Lam regarded Hanoi National University as a crucial institution for molding future intellectuals and leaders amid challenging times of national resistance and renewal.

During his address, To Lam articulated seven key priorities aimed at propelling Hanoi National University to a dominant role in Asia and eventually positioning it among the world’s premier universities. He reaffirmed the university's goal to be ranked within the top 100 universities in Asia by 2030 and among the top 300 globally by 2035.

The President underscored the necessity of innovation, digital transformation, and advancements in multiple fields including biotechnology and renewable energy. He urged the institution to spearhead research and technological development in alignment with Vietnam's economic and modernization ambitions.

To Lam also called for enhanced collaboration between academic institutions, industries, government, and international organizations. He stressed the need for research to extend beyond theoretical confines to deliver tangible benefits to communities and industries across Vietnam.

Academic diplomacy and Vietnam's standing on the global stage were additional focal points. To Lam urged Hanoi National University to bolster its international collaborations and serve as a representative of Vietnamese culture and innovation worldwide, noting its history of hosting global leaders and scholars.

In his closing remarks, the Vietnamese leader called for reforms in university governance, advocating for greater autonomy and improved research support. He reassured that government efforts to enhance education and scientific development would persist, driving the nation towards modernization by 2045.

The celebration concluded with accolades directed towards the university's faculty, researchers, students, and alumni, recognizing their vital contributions to Vietnam's educational advancements. To Lam expressed his firm belief in Hanoi National University’s continued integral role in shaping the nation’s future.
