Strengthening Thailand-Japan Ties Through KOSEN Education

Post by : Shakul

Thailand is advancing its partnership with Japan to broaden the reach of the esteemed KOSEN engineering curriculum to additional universities nationwide. This initiative aims to cultivate advanced technology experts who can bolster Thailand’s future sectors and fortify the nation's sustained economic prosperity.

The announcement was delivered by Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office, on May 16, 2026. She noted that the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation is collaborating with Japanese officials to further the second phase of the KOSEN initiative in Thailand.

KOSEN represents a Japanese educational framework designed to enhance engineering and technological skills. Known globally for generating exceptionally skilled technicians through practical learning experiences and industry-relevant education, the curriculum seamlessly integrates theoretical knowledge with hands-on training, adequately preparing students for professional careers in advanced technical fields.

Thai authorities conveyed that the expanded program is intended to produce specialists in sectors poised to drive Thailand's economic future, including aerospace technology, semiconductors, synchrotron science, digital innovation, and other tech industries. The government is optimistic about these sectors emerging as significant growth engines in the years ahead.

Recently, Professor Dr. Yotsanun Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, engaged in talks with the Japanese Ambassador to Thailand to discuss extending the KOSEN curriculum to one or two additional higher education institutions. The dialogue also encompassed plans to align Thai KOSEN programs with Japanese educational standards to enhance the global competitiveness of Thai graduates.

In addition to the KOSEN program, Thailand and Japan are intensifying their collaboration in various advanced technology areas. They are working jointly on projects related to space technology, satellite development, IoT systems for disaster warnings, climate monitoring technologies, and the digital economy. These initiatives are vital components of Thailand’s comprehensive strategy to evolve into an innovation-driven economy.

Furthermore, Japanese authorities are set to finalize a new memorandum of understanding with Thailand concerning space collaboration. This agreement is poised to solidify ties between Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Officials anticipate that this partnership will significantly deepen technological cooperation between the two nations.

The Thai government has asserted that investments in education, science, and innovation are fundamental aspects of its economic development blueprint. Authorities firmly believe that the KOSEN program will equip Thai youth with world-class technical education, enhance career prospects, and position the country competitively in high-tech global markets.
