In an important diplomatic effort, the United States revealed that productive discussions between Lebanon and Israel took place over two days at its Department of State, heralding the outcome as “highly productive.”
A statement from the Department of State on Friday articulated that both nations have adopted a new framework for negotiations aimed at enduring peace and stability in the region. This framework emphasizes honoring sovereignty, territorial integrity, and enhancing security along their common border.
The talks made significant headway on political matters, with a further set of discussions already planned for June 2 and June 3.
Under the terms of this agreement, Lebanon and Israel have also decided to prolong the cessation of hostilities initiated on April 16 for an additional 45 days. This extension aims to foster continued advancements in security communication and coordination.
According to the statement, discussions centered on security matters will commence later this month at the Pentagon, involving military delegations from Lebanon and Israel under US auspices to enhance communication and coordination.
The US government also shared its concerns regarding ongoing Hezbollah attacks on Israel, which have occurred without the endorsation of the Lebanese government. Washington remarked that such actions jeopardize diplomatic progress and could potentially derail the political framework.
Despite these hurdles, the US has praised the determination shown by both parties to strive for a lasting solution. The statement reaffirmed Washington's commitment to supporting both Lebanon and Israel in all political and security negotiations ahead.
