In a significant push to fortify its defence capabilities, Thailand’s Ministry of Defence is ramping up its focus on the nation's military production sector through robust research and development initiatives. Recently, senior officials undertook a tour of the Military Explosives Factory located in Nakhon Sawan Province to oversee production operations and evaluate the latest technological advancements aimed at enhancing the country’s self-reliance in national security.
The inspection occurred on May 15, 2026, under the leadership of General Tharaphong Malakham, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence. Accompanying him were Deputy Permanent Secretary General Sarun Petranon and a contingent of senior officials. Their visit focused on the Military Explosives Factory, a key unit operating under the Department of Military Industry, Defence Industry and Military Energy Center in Yan Matri Subdistrict, Phayuhakhiri District.
During this visit, officials evaluated the critical production initiatives, ongoing research projects, and plans for future growth within the factory. The Ministry of Defence articulated a clear aim: to enhance Thailand’s defence production capabilities by refining explosive and propellant manufacturing processes in line with international standards, while strategically aiming to decrease long-term reliance on foreign imports.
The Military Explosives Factory is pivotal in supplying ammunition, explosives, and military materials to both government entities and private clients, extending its reach domestically and internationally. Officials highlighted that the factory is committed to continuous research and product development to align with the evolving requirements of the defence sector.
As per the Ministry of Defence, the factory is equipped to produce both single-base and twin-base tubular propellants that comply with US and NATO standards. Its impressive annual production capacity totals 372 tons, comprising 300 tons of single-base and 72 tons of twin-base propellant. To maximize productivity, the facility operates round the clock across three shifts daily.
Furthermore, the factory has embarked on producing twin-base spherical propellant, utilizing technology acquired from China’s Norinco defense firm. This production line has an estimated annual output of 70 tons and marks a crucial milestone in enhancing Thailand’s domestic military manufacturing infrastructure.
During the tour, General Tharaphong reviewed the processes involved in spherical propellant pellet production, ammunition assembly, and current maintenance protocols at the factory. Updates were also shared on a joint research initiative with Kasetsart University aimed at developing indigenous cotton varieties for nitrocellulose production, a vital component in military explosives.
The government is optimistic that this initiative will pave the way for reduced dependence on imports, fostering a more sustainable and autonomous defence industry. Defence officials reiterated the increasing importance of bolstering local production capabilities amid escalating global security concerns and geopolitical challenges.
The Ministry of Defence reaffirmed that forthcoming investment in military research, advanced manufacturing technologies, and local raw material development is integral to Thailand’s comprehensive national security strategy moving forward.
