Tiger Woods, a 15-time major champion, has shared insights into his slow recovery following a recent back surgery, creating ambiguity around his return to competitive golf. Approaching his 50th birthday this month, Woods underwent a disc replacement in October, marking the seventh significant surgery on his back.
At the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, he mentioned that although he has begun chipping and putting, a timeline for his competitive play remains unclear. “It’s not progressing as quickly as I would like,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of patience and consistent effort.
Woods’ path in recent years has been fraught with obstacles. Following serious leg injuries from a 2021 vehicle accident, he made an appearance at the 2022 Masters, ending in 47th place. In September 2024, he faced another back surgery and experienced an Achilles tendon rupture soon after, further complicating his recovery.
Currently, Woods is gradually improving his mobility, engaging in limited gym workouts and rotational exercises to bolster his body while ensuring the healing disc remains safe. “Just letting the disc kind of set,” he remarked, reflecting his cautious strategy.
Though there has been speculation about a potential return at the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles this February, Woods chose to remain vague. “I don’t know… a disc replacement takes time. It’s quicker than a fusion, thankfully, but it needs its time,” he explained.
Despite the hurdles, Woods holds an unwavering love for golf. He shared his longing to return to the sport he cherishes. “I haven’t played in a long time. It’s been a challenging year… my passion for simply playing has been absent for too long,” he expressed, underlining his determination to bounce back and hit the course again.
