Shashi Tharoor, a prominent Congress leader and MP, has made a strong case to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the urgent selection of 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the Indian national cricket squad. Highlighting the teenager's remarkable performances in domestic cricket, Tharoor asserted that Suryavanshi's extraordinary skills warrant immediate acknowledgment at the highest level.
The 2025 domestic season has been a standout one for Vaibhav Suryavanshi, as he has shattered numerous records with his exhilarating batting style, capturing the interest of cricket aficionados nationwide. Recently, he achieved the record for the fastest 150 in List A cricket, a feat once held by legendary South African cricketer AB de Villiers. His phenomenal innings of 190 runs from just 84 balls included 15 enormous sixes and a flurry of boundaries, demonstrating a level of maturity and strength rare for someone of his age.
In a public statement, Tharoor compared Suryavanshi to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who made his international debut at the youthful age of 16, showcasing incredible talent as a teenager himself. He called on India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar to acknowledge Suryavanshi's vast potential and expedite his induction into the national team. Tharoor noted, "The last time a fourteen-year-old showed such prodigious cricketing talent, it was Sachin Tendulkar – and we all know what became of him."
Suryavanshi's significant accomplishments are part of the Bihar cricket team's historic success in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. Bihar has set a new world record for the highest team score in List A cricket, amassing an astonishing 574 runs for the loss of just six wickets. This record-setting innings featured standout performances from Suryavanshi, captain Sakibul Gani, and wicketkeeper Ayush Loharuka.
Captain Sakibul Gani provided an explosive contribution, scoring 128 runs from just 40 balls, achieving the quickest hundred by an Indian in List A cricket history. Additionally, Ayush Loharuka bolstered Bihar’s record total with a rapid 116 runs off 56 deliveries. Together, this exciting trio showcased an exhilarating brand of aggressive batting that left their rivals overwhelmed and thrilled the spectators.
The stunning achievements of these young athletes have drawn significant attention to Bihar’s emerging cricket talents, leading to calls for immediate recognition and opportunities at the national level. Analysts and fans alike are now urging the BCCI to honor Vaibhav Suryavanshi's exceptional performances by including him in the Indian cricket framework without further delay.
As Indian cricket continues to foster new waves of talent, Suryavanshi’s rapid ascent serves as a reminder of the game’s evolving future and the immense potential represented by its youngest stars.
