Border Tensions Rise as Thailand and Cambodia Trade Blame, Trump Offers to Step In

Post by : Saif Nasser

Fresh fighting has once again shaken the tense border between Thailand and Cambodia, with both countries accusing each other of targeting civilians. The conflict, which had eased after a ceasefire in July, has reignited and raised fears of an even larger confrontation. As the clashes continued on Wednesday, former U.S. President Donald Trump said he would make a phone call to stop the violence and revive the fragile peace he helped broker months ago.

The dispute between Thailand and Cambodia is rooted in long-standing disagreements over land and historic sites, especially near the ancient Preah Vihear temple. Although both countries agreed to a truce earlier this year, the peace never fully settled. Tensions rose again over claims of newly laid landmines, drone attacks, and troop movements along the border. Thailand suspended de-escalation measures last month after a soldier was seriously injured by what it says was a newly planted Cambodian landmine, a charge Cambodia strongly denies.

The latest clashes began on Monday. Since then, both sides have released statements blaming each other for attacks that have harmed both civilians and military personnel. Thailand says that BM-21 rockets fired by Cambodian forces landed near the Phanom Dong Rak Hospital in Surin, forcing staff and patients to take cover in emergency shelters. Thai officials report that drones, rockets, and tanks were also used in attacks near the heavily disputed temple area.

Cambodia, on the other hand, accuses Thailand of using artillery fire and armed drones to strike villages in Pursat and Battambang provinces. Cambodian authorities also claim Thai F-16 fighter jets crossed into their airspace and dropped bombs near civilian homes. The rising accusations show how quickly the situation is escalating and how difficult it may be to restore calm.

The fighting has caused major disruptions in both countries. Each government says hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from border regions to safer locations. Cambodia has reported nine civilian deaths since Monday, with twenty more seriously injured. Thailand says four of its soldiers have been killed and sixty-eight wounded. The violence has also affected regional events. Cambodia withdrew its athletes from the Southeast Asian Games being hosted in Thailand, citing fears for the safety of its delegation.

Diplomatic efforts are also struggling. Thailand’s foreign minister said the situation is not suitable for negotiations and warned against the use of tariff threats as a way to push the country into talks. Cambodia responded by saying it is ready to speak at any moment and only wants peace. While Cambodia appears open to dialogue, Thailand seems frustrated with what it sees as repeated violations and rising aggression.

Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump claimed credit for stopping major wars in the past and added that he would now intervene in this conflict. He said he would make a phone call “to stop a war between two very powerful countries,” referring to Thailand and Cambodia. Cambodia reacted calmly, saying its position remains focused on peace, while a Thai spokesperson said he did not know whether the Thai prime minister had spoken to Trump, as he was in parliament at the time.

Although Trump played a central role in arranging a truce earlier this year, both countries now appear far from a stable agreement. The fresh fighting shows how fragile the peace arrangements were and how quickly violence can return when deep mistrust exists. The border zone, filled with villages, farms, and historic sites, has once again turned into a battlefield where ordinary families suffer the most.

The renewed conflict highlights the urgent need for restraint and clear communication. More weapons, more drones, and more accusations will only push the region toward deeper trouble. A strong and honest diplomatic effort is necessary before the situation becomes even harder to control.

For now, the people living near the Thai-Cambodian border can only hope that leaders on both sides choose dialogue over conflict and find a path away from violence. The world will be watching to see if the promises of peace can be revived or if the region will sink further into dangerous and unpredictable fighting.
