Thailand Releases 18 Cambodian Soldiers in Ceasefire Shift

Post by : Mina Rahman

Thailand has completed the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers, held since July, in a significant move associated with a new ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia. This ceasefire, commenced at noon on Saturday, brings a pause to nearly three weeks of violent confrontations that resulted in at least 101 deaths and displaced over half a million individuals from both sides.

The soldiers spent a total of 155 days in custody before being returned to Cambodian officials at a border checkpoint on Wednesday morning. Although there was an initial arrangement to transfer them on Tuesday, delays occurred due to Thailand's claims that Cambodia had violated some conditions of the ceasefire. Cambodia has rebuffed these claims.

The Thai Foreign Ministry has assured that the Cambodian soldiers were treated in accordance with international humanitarian standards throughout their detention. This statement seeks to alleviate concerns regarding their treatment while in Thai hands.

The recent flare-up in border clashes followed the breakdown of a prior ceasefire brokered in July, which involved global leaders, including those from the United States and Malaysia, aiming to quell the violence. However, tensions escalated once more, leading to renewed hostilities characterized by artillery exchanges, rocket attacks, and fighter jet operations.

This new ceasefire agreement represents a promising development towards lasting peace at the border, with both Thailand and Cambodia expressing their intentions to uphold the truce and work through their ongoing disputes.
