On Saturday, Thailand and Cambodia formalized a pivotal ceasefire accord, effectively concluding weeks of military engagement along their disputed border. Effective immediately at noon local time, this agreement enforces stringent measures to cease military actions and honor respective airspace, with the goal of reinstating stability in the area.
This ceasefire is particularly significant as Thailand had conducted airstrikes against Cambodian positions up to Saturday morning. A prominent stipulation within the agreement mandates Thailand to release 18 Cambodian soldiers taken captive since the start of fighting in July. Cambodia has insisted on their release, which is expected to occur after a 72-hour observation period of ceasefire.
The deal was inked by Minister of Defense Tea Seiha from Cambodia and Thailand’s Defense Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit at a border junction, following three consecutive days of discussions at lower military echelons under the General Border Committee.
This new agreement reiterates commitments made in a previous ceasefire established in July, which resolved an earlier five-day confrontation, and introduces 16 supplementary measures aimed at preventing future conflicts.
Even after the prior ceasefire, tensions persisted, with ongoing disinformation and minor skirmishes leading to significant fighting in early December. The conflict has claimed a heavy toll, with 26 Thai soldiers and one civilian dead, while Cambodia reports 30 civilian fatalities and 90 injuries. Each side continues to blame the other for instigating the violence, asserting self-defense.
The agreement also introduces restrictions on the use of land mines, a longstanding issue for Thailand due to injuries resulting from what is believed to be newly placed mines by Cambodia, although Cambodia contends these mines are remnants from former civil conflicts.
Both nations have pledged to halt the dissemination of misinformation and to advance previous efforts at clearly defining their border. Furthermore, they aim to collaborate on tackling transnational crimes, particularly online scams—an area where Cambodia has garnered notoriety.
This ceasefire offers a promising avenue toward enduring peace and cooperation between the two nations after a fraught chapter of conflict.
