Tejas Fighter Jet Crashes During Dubai Air Show, Pilot's Condition Unknown

Post by : Raina Nasser

On Friday afternoon, a tragic incident unfolded at the Dubai Air Show when a Tejas fighter jet crashed during its aerial demonstration. Spectators at Al Maktoum International Airport witnessed the aircraft descend rapidly amidst flames and smoke, sparking shock across the venue at around 2:10 pm local time.

This incident involved a single-seat Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India. As of now, officials have not disclosed the pilot's status or confirmed if an ejection was executed. The Indian Air Force is expected to release an official statement soon.

The Dubai Air Show marks a significant event on the global aviation calendar, featuring major announcements, including multimillion-dollar aircraft contracts secured by Emirates and FlyDubai this week. The Tejas crash introduced an unforeseen dramatic twist to the show.

Witnesses shared videos of the jet carrying out its routine display before suddenly losing altitude and crashing. Shortly after, it erupted in flames, sending dark smoke billowing into the sky, visible from various vantage points.

This marks the second crash of a Tejas jet in under two years. The previous incident occurred in March 2024 in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, where the pilot managed a safe ejection—an event noted as the first crash in the aircraft’s 23-year legacy since its inaugural flight in 2001.

The Tejas fighter jet is regarded as a 4.5-generation multi-role combat aircraft, adept for air defense, offensive air support, and close-combat operations. Recognized for being one of the smallest and lightest in its class, it features a Martin-Baker zero-zero ejection seat that enables safe ejections even at zero altitude and speed, deploying parachutes to ensure a controlled descent.

The Tejas program plays a vital role in India’s initiative to modernize its fighter fleet while decreasing dependence on foreign technologies. The inaugural squadron, No. 45 ‘Flying Daggers,’ joined the Indian Air Force back in 2016.

As the aircraft plunged, onlookers expressed both fear and disbelief, though reports confirm that there were no injuries reported on the ground. Investigative efforts are ongoing to uncover the reasons behind the crash.
