Taliban Forces 13-Year-Old to Execute Convicted Murderer in Khost Stadium

Post by : Samir Nasser

In a harrowing act of retributive justice, the Taliban orchestrated a public execution in Khost province, Afghanistan, where a 13-year-old boy was compelled to shoot a man found guilty of killing over a dozen family members. This grim event unfolded last week at a crowded sports stadium, with reports estimating attendance at around 80,000 people.

The condemned individual, named Mangal, was sentenced alongside two accomplices for the murder of 13 relatives of the boy, including women and children. According to the Taliban's Supreme Court, the execution was performed under Qisas, a Sharia law principle akin to the notion of “an eye for an eye.” Although the boy's family could have chosen forgiveness, they opted for the death penalty instead.

The Supreme Court confirmed the execution on social media, noting that the family turned down any plea for leniency. Although mobile phones were reportedly banned from the stadium, videos taken from outside revealed that tens of thousands attended the grim occasion.

This incident marks the 11th public execution since the Taliban regained control in 2021, reinstating harsh Sharia punishments. Such acts have included responses to murder, adultery, and theft, leading to executions, amputations, and public floggings as per the group's interpretation of Islamic law.

Under Taliban rule, the rights of women and girls have faced severe restrictions, provoking widespread international criticism. Female students are not allowed to attend secondary schools or universities, and many professional avenues for women have been entirely shut down, exacerbating the ongoing human rights crisis in the country.

The public execution in Khost has sparked global rebuke, with the United Nations condemning the act as “inhumane and cruel” and drawing attention to the profound effects of Taliban governance on Afghan society.
