Taiwan Launches Inquiry Into Intel's New Hire from TSMC

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

An investigation has been initiated in Taiwan regarding a retired senior executive from TSMC, who is suspected of transferring confidential semiconductor technology to Intel following his recent employment with the U.S. chip giant. The case has attracted significant interest within the global semiconductor sector, where competition for advanced manufacturing capabilities is intensifying.

Media sources in Taiwan have reported that the executive in question is Wei-Jen Lo, a pivotal contributor to TSMC's advancements in 5nm, 3nm, and 2nm process technologies. After dedicating over two decades to TSMC, he joined Intel in October and is now facing allegations that he may have taken sensitive internal data before leaving TSMC.

The High Prosecutors Office of Taiwan has acknowledged the case and has opened a preliminary investigation, though no formal allegations or charges have been established. The aim is to ascertain whether any unauthorized technology transfer took place and to evaluate potential violations of national security legislation.

Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin emphasized the government's serious approach to the issue on Wednesday, underscoring that semiconductor expertise is a vital national asset. He mentioned that authorities will work together with prosecutors to determine if current technology safeguarding measures are adequate.

TSMC has not provided any comments on the situation, while Intel has kept its silence, not publicly acknowledging Lo's hiring. A knowledgeable source confirmed that Lo is actively working at Intel, reporting directly to CEO Lip-Bu Tan.

Lo's career has seen him spend 21 years at TSMC, predominantly leading research and advanced technology development efforts. He had a prior 18-year stint at Intel, where he held several leadership positions, including director of technology development.

The government will closely monitor any possible repercussions this investigation may have on Taiwan's semiconductor ecosystem and its relations with key international partners. The inquiry is still in its nascent stages as authorities begin to compile relevant data.
