Moreover, J.J. Starling chimed in with 11 points, hitting a crucial three-pointer as Monmouth closed the gap. Syracuse's shooting was on point overall, with a 50% shooting accuracy and a remarkable 60.9% in the second half, which helped them once build a 14-point cushion.
Despite entering the game with just one victory in three attempts, Monmouth played tenaciously. Justin Ray delivered a standout performance, amassing 25 points, including four pivotal three-pointers, keeping Monmouth in contention with precise shooting and strategic play.
Stefanos Spartalis also had a breakout game with 18 points, while Jack Collins contributed with 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists, marking him as a significant player for Monmouth. Their cohesive teamwork capitalized on Syracuse's missteps at the free-throw line, where the team notably missed 11 shots in the second half.
Star player for Monmouth, Jason Rivera-Torres, faced challenges with just seven points due to foul troubles, yet he impressed with a key block on a Syracuse layup. This block initiated a fast break where Justin Ray netted another three-pointer to narrow the gap to 67-60.
Syracuse responded adeptly, with Starling sinking a vital three-pointer to restore an 11-point lead. Monmouth, however, remained relentless. With under two minutes remaining, Collins snatched a rebound from Freeman and hit a jumper, tightening the score to 73-67 as tension mounted.
Starling stepped up to hit one out of two free throws, while Rivera-Torres followed with a layup to further close the lead. Collins then drained a monumental three-pointer, bringing the score to 74-72 with just 36 seconds to go, causing the crowd to hold its breath as Monmouth aimed for a comeback.
Freeman calmly made two free throws to give Syracuse a slight buffer. Rivera-Torres converted one free throw to cut the score to 76-73. In the dying seconds, Bryce Zephir of Syracuse faltered on both free throws, giving Monmouth a final shot. Unfortunately, Rivera-Torres’s three-point attempt fell short, sealing the victory for Syracuse.
