Global Aid Reductions May Lead to Increased Child Mortality

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The global community is facing an alarming setback in child health as anticipated reductions in international aid are set to add approximately 200,000 more child fatalities under five this year, compared to the previous year. The Gates Foundation warns that this might signify the first rise in preventable child deaths this century.

Over the past twenty years, child mortality rates have significantly decreased, falling from 9 million fatalities in 2000 to around 4.6 million in 2024. However, these hard-earned advancements are in jeopardy. According to the latest Goalkeepers report by the foundation, the number of child deaths could escalate to 4.8 million this year if international support does not improve.

The funding decline is a global issue, initiated by reductions in U.S. aid early in the year, which have since impacted other primary donors, such as the UK and Germany. Overall, there has been a nearly 27% decline in global health development assistance when compared to last year, putting additional strain on health systems already facing challenges.

These funding cuts come at a time when many low- and middle-income countries are grappling with significant national debts and weak healthcare frameworks. Projections indicate that without renewed aid, up to 16 million more children could perish by 2045, highlighting the severe long-term implications of the current aid shortfall.

Experts call for a blend of innovative strategies and well-established solutions—including vaccination drives, improved access to basic health services, and investments in primary healthcare—to prevent further regressions. The upcoming months are critical to determining whether the world can protect the substantial gains made in child survival.
