Sunderland and Everton Draw 1-1 as Xhaka’s Deflection Cancels Ndiaye Wonder

Post by : Raina Nasser

Sunderland and Everton were held to a 1-1 draw in an engaging Premier League meeting at the Stadium of Light on Monday, with Granit Xhaka’s deflected effort cancelling out Iliman Ndiaye’s early moment of magic.

The result maintained Sunderland’s strong start after promotion, moving them to fourth place with 18 points from 10 outings. Everton remain 14th on 12 points as inconsistency continues to hamper their campaign.

Ndiaye put the visitors in front in the 15th minute with an eye-catching solo run. Receiving the ball on the right, he beat several defenders before bending a clinical finish into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Everton controlled the opening period and squandered further chances — James Garner’s shot skimming wide, Jack Grealish rattling the post, and Thierno Barry failing to convert a close-range opportunity.

Sunderland found momentum after the half-hour mark and repeatedly threatened, eventually equalising 40 seconds into the second half when Xhaka’s low drive took a heavy deflection off James Tarkowski and wrong-footed goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Both teams searched for a late winner: Sunderland dominated possession while Everton looked to break quickly on the counter, but neither managed to produce a decisive moment.

Xhaka reflected on the match, complaining, “We lost the three points today in the first 25 minutes — too many easy mistakes. The second half was excellent, but we just needed a bit more luck.”

Everton manager David Moyes, mindful of his side's ambitions, rued missed chances. “We played very well early on and got a fantastic goal, but you have to finish games like this,” he said.

The draw showcased Sunderland’s resilience and highlighted Everton’s inefficiency in front of goal, leaving both clubs with clear areas to address as the season progresses.
