Sudan's RSF Endorses US-Facilitated Humanitarian Ceasefire

Post by : Raina Nasser

In a pivotal moment for Sudan, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have announced their acceptance of a humanitarian ceasefire proposal crafted by the United States in collaboration with Arab states. This acceptance indicates their willingness to engage in discussions to conclude the ongoing conflict with the Sudanese army.

This development, reported on Thursday, brings a glimmer of hope amidst the two-and-a-half-year-long war that has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and displaced millions. While the Sudanese army has not yet made an official statement, insiders suggest that key military figures are hesitant about the proposal.

The RSF expressed hope, stating that they are prepared to put the agreement into action and begin talks regarding the cessation of hostilities and the foundational principles governing Sudan's political framework.

The US State Department has confirmed its ongoing efforts to engage both factions in advancing the ceasefire initiative. A spokesperson remarked, “We encourage both parties to consider the urgency of this US-led effort to finalize a humanitarian truce, given the dire circumstances facing the Sudanese people.”

Increasing Calls for Peace

This initiative, backed by the United States along with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt, proposes a three-month humanitarian truce followed by negotiations aimed at a lasting ceasefire. This comes amid escalating violence in Darfur, especially after the RSF took control of El Fasher, a city severely affected by famine.

Civilian casualties and abductions have been reported during and after this takeover, prompting international alarm. In response, RSF leadership has called on their fighters to ensure civilian safety and promised accountability for any violations.

A Nation Distressed

The conflict erupted in April 2023 as tensions flared between the RSF and the Sudanese army, formerly allies, over disagreements regarding the integration of their forces. This strife has plunged Sudan into a humanitarian catastrophe, causing millions to face displacement and imminent hunger.

While past ceasefire attempts have failed, many experts believe that this latest US-supported effort has the potential to mark a crucial shift if both sides engage in genuine dialogue and self-restraint.

As Sudan approaches another pivotal moment in its history, the global community watches with bated breath, hoping for a transition from violence to peace.
