Statue of Liberty Replica Topples in Brazil Due to Strong Winds

Post by : Raina Nasser

In a surprising event on Monday, December 15, a monumental replica of the Statue of Liberty fell in southern Brazil due to powerful winds. The 24-meter tall statue, situated in the parking lot of a Havan store in Guaíba near Porto Alegre, collapsed without causing any injuries.

Social media footage depicts the statue swaying precariously before it finally fell, while vehicles passed nearby along the bustling road. Located near a fast-food restaurant, the statue had attracted many locals and customers. Fortunately, the area was largely vacant at the time, averting any harm to bystanders.

Earlier in the day, local authorities had issued a red alert, warning residents of the intense winds hitting the region. Civil defence officials advised people to remain indoors, secure their properties, and disconnect electrical devices as a safety measure. Despite these precautions, the fierce winds proved strong enough to overturn the iconic structure.

The Havan retail chain, the owner of the statue, confirmed the incident and pledged full cooperation with the investigation into the cause of the collapse. Civil defence authorities announced that a technical evaluation will be conducted to assess the reasons behind the fall and to offer recommendations for future safety measures.

The incident swiftly became a trending topic on the internet, with the search term "statue of liberty fall down" ranking at the top of Google Trends in India on Tuesday. Thousands searched for related keywords such as "Brazil statue of liberty", "statue of liberty collapse", and "statue of liberty replica Brazil".

Although strong winds have caused damage in southern Brazil before, the dramatic fall of this large replica has captivated audiences around the globe. This occurrence underscores the need for safety precautions in areas vulnerable to severe weather, especially concerning large public structures.
