Spirit Airlines has unveiled a fresh set of cost-reduction measures aimed at restoring its financial footing. The ultra-low-cost carrier plans to cut roughly 150 salaried jobs and suspend operations at five airports, among them Milwaukee and Phoenix, with the changes effective by January 2026.
The announcement arrives as Spirit contends with significant financial strain after a prolonged period of losses and softer demand. The carrier has warned it may face an estimated $804 million loss for 2025, highlighting the scale of its earnings challenge.
In its statement, Spirit said the actions are designed to "align operations with market realities and strengthen long-term financial health." The airline added that although the measures are painful, they are "necessary to secure a sustainable future and restore profitability."
Earlier, Spirit disclosed plans to furlough about 365 pilots and to downgrade up to 170 additional pilots in early 2026 as part of network optimization. Company leaders say these moves are intended to cut excess capacity and boost route efficiency.
As part of its turnaround strategy announced this year, Spirit aims to return to profit by 2027. The carrier will pare back its 2026 network, concentrating on higher-yield markets while trimming underperforming services.
Operating under an ultra-low-cost model, Spirit has been hit by rising costs, intense competition and weaker demand in certain markets. Grounded aircraft, volatile fuel prices and the collapse of a proposed merger with JetBlue have further pressured the airline's balance sheet.
Despite the difficult outlook, Spirit says it remains committed to offering budget travel options as it restructures. "We are taking decisive steps today to ensure Spirit's success tomorrow," the company stated.
The carrier's restructuring mirrors broader trends in the U.S. aviation sector, where several airlines are tightening networks and cutting costs amid uncertain economic conditions.
