Six Pakistani Soldiers Die in Kurram Operation Against TTP Militants

Post by : Raina Nasser

In a serious escalation along Pakistan’s frontier with Afghanistan, six Pakistan Army personnel — among them Captain Noman Saleem — were killed in a violent encounter with Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) fighters in Kurram district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported on Wednesday. The episode underscores mounting security pressures after the TTP abandoned its 2022 ceasefire.

The exchange took place during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Dogar area, a sector frequently used for cross-border militant activity. The ISPR said the mission targeted militants described by the military as part of Fitna al-Khawarij, a label applied to operatives linked to the banned TTP network. Officials reported seven militants were killed in the operation.

Captain Noman Saleem, a 24-year-old medical officer from Mianwali, was among those killed; the army said he “fought gallantly” and was martyred alongside five colleagues. The other deceased servicemen were named as Havaldar Amjad Ali (39, Swabi), Naik Waqas Ahmad (36, Rawalpindi), Sepoy Aijaz Ali (23, Shikarpur), Sepoy Muhammad Waleed (23, Jhelum) and Sepoy Muhammad Shahbaz (32, Khairpur).

Following the firefight, security units launched a sanitisation operation to clear the area of any remaining militants. The ISPR reiterated Pakistan’s determination to pursue its counterterrorism campaign, Azm-e-Istehkam, and said operations aimed at dismantling both foreign-backed and domestic terrorist networks will continue robustly.

Kurram, which borders Afghanistan, has long been vulnerable to militant infiltration and assaults on security forces. Provincial Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) figures show significant losses and activity across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this year: 298 fatalities in terrorist incidents, 2,366 intelligence-based operations, 1,124 militant arrests, 368 terrorists killed in encounters and 6,181 suspects charged in terrorism-related cases.

Security agencies have also stepped up action against extortion networks, recording 1,287 cases, lodging charges against 209 suspects and detaining 52 individuals as part of ongoing efforts.

The deadly clash in Kurram highlights the enduring threat posed by the TTP in northern Pakistan and the continuing cost borne by military personnel defending the country’s borders, even as local communities and authorities struggle with the broader human and security consequences.
