Tragic Shooting in Washington DC Claims Life of National Guard Soldier

A devastating incident unfolded in Washington DC on Wednesday as two National Guard members were shot at close range near Farragut Square. The tragic attack ended the life of 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, while her comrade, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, remains critically wounded, fighting for survival. This violent event transpired shortly after 2:00 PM EST in downtown Washington, just a stone's throw from the White House.

The alleged assailant, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, was swiftly taken into custody by law enforcement, sustaining four gunshot wounds during his arrest. Originating from Afghanistan, Lakanwal resettled in the United States in 2021, partaking in a program dedicated to providing special immigration protections for Afghans following the US military withdrawal. He faces multiple charges, including assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a violent act. Attorney General Pam Bondi has emphasized that her office will pursue the death penalty, labeling the suspect a "monster who should not have been in our country."

Originally from West Virginia, Sarah Beckstrom enlisted in the Army National Guard in June 2023 and was serving with the 863rd Military Police Company of the 111th Engineer Brigade. She had volunteered to be deployed in Washington DC over the Thanksgiving holiday. President Donald Trump acknowledged her sacrifice during a call with military personnel and later reached out to her grieving family. Senator Jim Justice extended his condolences, emphasizing that the nation’s thoughts and prayers are with the families of Beckstrom and Andrew Wolfe during this tragic period.

The suspect, Lakanwal, has a background that includes working with US forces in Afghanistan, notably as part of the CIA-aligned Kandahar Strike Force, known as Scorpion Forces, and later with Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security. His responsibilities included providing GPS tracking and protection for US forces at Kabul airport during the tumultuous evacuation in 2021. After applying for asylum in 2024, his request was granted earlier this year.

In light of this incident, the US government has initiated a review of green card provisions for individuals hailing from 19 countries, Afghanistan included. Joseph Edlow, head of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, disclosed that President Trump directed a “full scale, rigorous re-examination” of these green card approvals to bolster national security. This review follows heightened anxiety after the DC shooting, showcasing the administration’s dedication to refining security and immigration procedures.

The shooting has ignited serious discussions regarding the vetting of immigrants admitted to the US under special programs, leading to demands for more stringent immigration and security policies. National Guard members continue their vigilant patrols through key areas in Washington DC, ensuring the capital's safety as authorities delve into the motives and background of the arrested suspect.
