A shooting incident at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky, on Tuesday has resulted in the death of one student while another remains in a critical state just as winter break approaches.
The alleged shooter, a 48-year-old Indiana resident not affiliated with the university, has been arrested and is facing charges of first-degree murder and assault. He is currently held at Franklin County Regional Jail.
Authorities report that the critically injured student is in a stable condition, confirming that the shooting was not premeditated.
In light of the incident, all classes, assessments, and campus activities have been canceled for the remainder of the week. Students have been permitted to go home, with the university promising to provide further details.
Campus police swiftly apprehended the suspect shortly after the first shots rang out, securing the scene within minutes and assuring that there was no ongoing threat.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear characterized the event as an isolated incident targeting the historically Black university, situated about 25 miles from Lexington.
This represents the 73rd school shooting in the U.S. in 2023, as per national statistics. Kentucky State University, established in 1886, has an enrollment of over 2,200 students and a faculty of about 450.
The shooting occurred around 3:10 p.m. close to the Whitney M. Young Jr. residence hall, with the names of the victims withheld to honor their privacy. The university is providing counseling and support services for all affected individuals.
University President Koffi C. Akakpo labeled the shooting a “senseless tragedy” and asked the community to pray for the students and their families.
Law enforcement praised the immediate and effective response of campus, local, and federal agencies, which helped minimize further risks.
This violent occurrence adds to an unsettling trend at historically Black colleges and universities, following incidents at institutions such as Howard University and Lincoln University earlier this year.
