Sherrone Moore Arrested, Fired as Michigan Wolverines Coach

Post by : Mina Rahman

Former Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore, who was relieved of his duties earlier on Wednesday, was taken into police custody later that night as authorities launched an investigation into an alleged assault.

According to Pittsfield Township Police in Michigan, officers were dispatched Wednesday afternoon after receiving a report of an assault. The department confirmed that a suspect was detained and noted that the incident appeared to be targeted, with no broader threat to the public. Moore was later booked into the Washtenaw County Jail while prosecutors review potential charges. Investigators said they are withholding additional information to protect the integrity of the case.

Before arriving in Pittsfield Township’s custody, Moore had been located and temporarily held by the Saline Police Department, a nearby jurisdiction west of Pittsfield.

The University of Michigan announced Moore’s immediate dismissal earlier in the day, stating that an internal inquiry uncovered “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship involving the head coach and a staff member. Athletic Director Warde Manuel emphasized that the findings represented a clear violation of university policy, adding that the institution maintains a zero-tolerance stance toward such conduct.

Following the decision, Biff Poggi was named interim head coach.

Moore’s exit caps a turbulent 9–3 season that included a two-game suspension stemming from the program’s sign-stealing controversy. Michigan closed the regular season ranked No. 18 in the College Football Playoff standings and is set to meet No. 13 Texas on December 31 in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

The 39-year-old coach recorded a 16–8 mark during his tenure after succeeding Jim Harbaugh, who left Michigan for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers following the school’s 2023 national championship run.
