Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s recent assault in Mexico City has focused attention on the country’s fragmented approach to protecting women, prompting her to demand that sexual harassment be penalized at the federal level. The episode underscored everyday dangers faced by women in Latin America’s second-largest economy.
The 63-year-old president was meeting and greeting people close to the presidential palace when a man, reportedly intoxicated, put an arm around her, groped her hip and chest and attempted to kiss her neck. Presidential guards intervened swiftly; the suspect was detained and later charged with harassment.
Speaking at a press briefing, Sheinbaum said she only grasped the full scale of the incident after watching video footage. She used the episode to press for a review of national legislation, arguing the event highlighted gaps in legal protections for women.
At present, the capital and roughly 20 of Mexico’s 32 states treat sexual harassment as a criminal offence, but a uniform federal statute does not exist. Sheinbaum asked, rhetorically, what the consequences would be for ordinary women if an attack can happen to the president.
The assault has revived debate about gender violence in Mexico. United Nations figures indicate around 70 percent of Mexican women aged 15 and older have experienced sexual harassment at least once, while roughly 10 women are killed each day. Feminist organisations said the incident symbolises the persistent threats women confront routinely.
Sheinbaum, who has recounted similar harassment earlier in her life, filed an official complaint and signalled she will push for stronger, harmonised protections nationwide. Human rights groups welcomed the proposal to ensure sexual harassment is uniformly recognised as a criminal offence across all states.
Security analysts warned the episode also raises questions about presidential safety: her choice to interact closely with the public increases exposure, particularly amid wider cartel-related violence. Sheinbaum has declined to expand her personal security detail, asserting the importance of remaining accessible to citizens. The episode has reignited national discussions on legal reform, public safety and gender-based violence.
