Sheikh Sultan Celebrates Arabic Poetry at Sharjah Book Fair

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The vibrant literary atmosphere of Sharjah was illuminated this evening as His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, attended the "Asmar Podcast" event during the Sharjah International Book Fair at Expo Centre Sharjah. This session offered an in-depth look into the beauty, historical weight, and cultural relevance of Arabic poetry.

Dr Faisal Al Shahrani hosted the podcast, featuring renowned poets Abdullah Al Anzi and Hosni Malek, who explored the diverse landscape of Arabic poetry. Their discussions touched upon its rich historical context, cultural significance, and its lasting influence on contemporary media. They examined how poetry serves as a mirror, reflecting the emotions and social narratives within Arab communities.

The dialogue also paid tribute to iconic poets such as Al-Mutanabbi, Abu Firas Al Hamdani, Abu Tammam, Al Bardouni, and Ahmed Shawqi. The themes varied widely, covering love and valor, satire, and the deep expressions of joy and sorrow. The poets' techniques were analyzed, revealing their skillful blending of contrasting motifs—such as romance and conflict—while maintaining lyrical integrity.

Event participants enjoyed recitations from various historical eras, which showcased the linguistic creativity and adaptability of Arab poets. Personal anecdotes highlighted how individual life experiences fueled the creation of their enduring works. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of poems on similar topics underscored the distinct styles and emotional depth that each poet brings to their art.

To commence the session, Abdullah Al Anzi delivered a poignant poem honoring Sharjah as a center of knowledge and creativity, highlighting its pivotal role in fostering poets, scholars, and recognized thinkers through its continuous literary activities. The event inspired attendees, reaffirming the timelessness and cultural relevance of Arabic poetry today.
