Escalating Violence in Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina Responds to Hadi’s Death

Post by : Raina Nasser

Bangladesh is grappling with escalating violence and unrest after the assassination of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent political figure. Hadi was instrumental in the July movement that resulted in Sheikh Hasina’s ousting from power last year. Since his passing, the surge in violence has been particularly evident in Dhaka, the capital.

Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh's former Prime Minister, has publicly condemned the current situation. She mentioned that violence has unfortunately become a customary part of life in the country, holding the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus accountable for its inability to maintain order.

The Circumstances Surrounding Hadi’s Assassination

Sharif Osman Hadi was shot at close range on December 12 while sitting in a rickshaw in Dhaka, sustaining severe head injuries.

He received initial treatment in Bangladesh before being airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical care. However, he succumbed to his injuries on December 18.

His death has ignited widespread anger, leading to new waves of protests and violent confrontations across the nation.

Events Immediately After His Passing

In the wake of Hadi’s assassination, numerous incidents of violence occurred:

  • Damage was inflicted on the offices of leading newspapers.

  • Cultural institutions and art centers also reported attacks.

Such events have intensified fear and anxiety in the nation. Sheikh Hasina expressed concern that the persistent violence is jeopardizing Bangladesh’s peace and security.

Sheikh Hasina’s Strong Statements

Sheikh Hasina remarked that the current government seems either oblivious to the violence or ineffective in curtailing it. She pointed out that this turmoil is not just detrimental to Bangladesh, but it also risks straining relations with neighboring countries.

Moreover, she warned that religious minorities are increasingly under threat, and extremist factions appear to be gaining traction. She indicated that dangerous individuals are being allowed back into society.

Hasina cautioned that if this violence is not curtailed quickly, it could destabilize the greater South Asian region.

Recent Anti-India Protests and Minority Violence

In the past week, anti-India demonstrations have erupted in Bangladesh. Notably, a Hindu man was brutally killed, and his remains were set ablaze on a highway.

Authorities later declared they had found no evidence that the victim had made any inflammatory remarks, which had been cited by the mob as justification for their actions.

Due to escalating safety concerns, the Indian Visa Application Centre in Chittagong has temporarily halted all visa services.

Political Unrest and Future Concerns

Sheikh Hasina also addressed her court ruling, deeming it unjust and politically motivated. She asserted that she was not afforded an adequate opportunity to defend herself.

She further stated that elections held without her party would be meaningless and would disenfranchise millions of citizens.

Hasina emphasized that her departure from Bangladesh was to prevent further bloodshed, not to evade accountability, and pledged to return only when the nation achieves a just government and independent judiciary.

The Significance of This Situation

The violence in Bangladesh has emerged as a pressing issue. Citizens are fearful, minorities feel increasingly threatened, and political strains continue to escalate. Many worry that the instability may worsen without a swift restoration of peace.

This remains a developing and distressing situation that draws the attention of the international community.
