Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Sharjah has solidified its status as a center for Arabic language and culture with the hosting of the Third Sharjah International Conference on Arabic Language Studies in Europe (SICALE) 2025. Under the theme “Contributions of Orientalists to the Arabic Language,” this event gathered scholars from 19 European nations to delve into the dynamics of Arabic across history and contemporary contexts.

His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, offered a warm welcome to the attendees, celebrating Arabic's role as a binding force among people. He remarked on the significance of Arabic in embodying universal values that connect different cultures.

“This conference has gathered you under one purpose: Humanity Unites Us and Arabic Unites Us,” His Highness emphasized, pointing to the shared experiences in Arabic education, research, and teaching methods, especially for those learning as a second language. He reaffirmed Sharjah's commitment to enhancing global collaboration in Arabic language studies.

Sharjah as a Nexus for Language and Culture

The conference showcased 24 research papers, addressing themes such as the translation of Arabic literature, the migration of Arabic terminology into European languages, and forward-thinking educational techniques. Dr Mohamed Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary-General of the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy, welcomed the global scholars and acknowledged their commitment to the Arabic language. He highlighted Arabic's role in uniting people and enriching intercultural comprehension.

Dr Irina Lebedeva from Moscow State University praised Sharjah’s cultural significance, naming it a capital of literature and literature. She recognized Arabic's importance in facilitating cultural dialogue and pointed out that the conference's activities bolster the global stature of the Arabic language.

Protecting Heritage Through Literature

Classical Arabic literature was a key topic of discourse. Dr Sebastian Günther from the University of Göttingen emphasized the essentiality of engaging with texts in their original Arabic form before applying theoretical analysis. His insights showcased how classical literature, ranging from pre-Islamic poetry to writings from the Abbasid era, sheds light on human wisdom, ethics, and aesthetic values.

The Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language also featured prominently, a significant project by the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy that highlights the emirate’s commitment to preserving its linguistic heritage.

Bridging Gaps Between Europe and the Arab Region

Participants discussed the impact of Arabic on European languages and literature, focusing on translation and communication as well as the significance of hidden Arabic texts found in European archives. Scholars exchanged ideas on teaching Arabic to non-native speakers and enhancing research capabilities, aiming to uphold the language's vitality in academic circles worldwide.

The conference concluded with thoughtful discussions on Arabic's lasting relevance and the critical nature of international partnerships. Sharjah continues to enhance its reputation as a focal point for language, culture, and scholarly exchange, reaffirming its role as a leading center for Arabic studies.
