A significant moment unfolded in Sharjah on Tuesday morning as His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the redesigned Independence Square. This event coincided with the celebrations for the UAE’s 54th Eid Al Etihad, bestowing added national importance.
The highlight of the development was the official unveiling of the Independence Monument, a towering 34-metre structure. His Highness revealed a commemorative plaque, marking this urban landmark that symbolizes the UAE’s path to independence. Topped with a seven-pointed star, it represents the seven emirates.
Each face of the monument showcases pivotal historical milestones. One plaque emphasizes the agreement made by the Rulers on December 2, 1971, to form the United Arab Emirates post-independence from Britain. Another details the 151 years of British jurisdiction beginning with the treaty of January 8, 1820. Additional inscriptions reflect on the establishment of the Sharjah Civil Air Station in 1932 and the historical presence of a British military base in the region.
Following the monument’s unveiling, His Highness toured the square, which now features two fountains flanking the monument, redesigned pathways, enhanced green spaces, and an upgraded lighting system, elevating the square’s nighttime allure.
The surrounding area also saw improvements, with facades of 24 buildings adorned with architectural elements that represent Sharjah’s essence. 95 commercial signboards were revamped to create a consistent urban atmosphere, complemented by newly installed lighting to enhance the local environment.
Infrastructure developments were a key aspect of this initiative, with upgrades made to roads, sidewalks, and parking facilities to facilitate traffic flow and ensure pedestrian safety. All lighting posts around the square were also replaced as part of the enhancement efforts.
The revitalization of Independence Square aligns with Sharjah’s broader ambitions to enrich its urban landscape, enhance living standards, and preserve its cultural and architectural uniqueness.
Alongside the square, His Highness also inaugurated the refurbished Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque, located nearby. Built originally in 1995, the mosque has been renovated in the Fatimid architectural style. After unveiling the reopening plaque, His Highness performed prayers inside. The renovations included raising the minarets and main walls, adding an exterior arcade, and enhancing internal facilities to boost its role within the community.
Sheikh Dr Sultan was accompanied by high-ranking officials, including Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Sheikh Majid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, and numerous dignitaries.
This inauguration stands as a testament to Sharjah’s continual commitment to mindful urban progression and the safeguarding of national heritage.
