Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, again sparked controversy after publicly commending former US president Donald Trump for what he described as a pivotal contribution to international peace. The social media post triggered an immediate response from ex-ambassador Husain Haqqani, who ridiculed the praise, and drew attention from Indian MP Shashi Tharoor.
On X (formerly Twitter), Sharif credited Trump with helping to advance reconciliation in conflicts such as those between Cambodia and Thailand and cited agreements including the Kuala Lumpur Accord and the Gaza Peace Plan. He framed these initiatives as part of broader efforts by Trump to stabilise the Middle East and South Asia.
Sharif stated that he had put forward Mr Trump’s name for the Nobel Peace Prize and labelled him a global advocate for peace. This endorsement followed a similar public commendation delivered by Sharif at the Gaza Summit in Egypt, where he attributed recent de-escalation in the region in part to Trump’s initiatives.
Former Pakistani envoy Husain Haqqani reacted with sarcasm, mocking the prime minister’s repeated praise and quipping that Sharif was leading the "Olympic sport of flattering Trump." The comment rapidly circulated online and intensified public scrutiny of the remarks.
Indian politician Shashi Tharoor also amplified the exchange by resharing Haqqani’s post on his official X account, adding momentum to a debate that drew reactions across South Asia. Critics accused Sharif of undermining Pakistan’s standing through excessive adulation of a foreign leader, while supporters suggested the comments aim to bolster ties with Washington.
This episode was not isolated. Earlier in the month at the Gaza Summit, Sharif had publicly praised Trump’s "relentless efforts," saying Pakistan had nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, remarks delivered with Trump present at the event.
Sharif reiterated his intent to nominate Trump again, citing the former president’s alleged role in preventing large-scale loss of life in South Asia and the Middle East. The declaration drew criticism from opposition figures and sections of the public, who dismissed it as unnecessary flattery and questioned its diplomatic rationale.
The exchange underlines the intricate link between domestic politics and diplomacy in South Asia, where public gestures toward foreign powers are closely observed. While some view Sharif’s statements as a strategic outreach to the United States amid shifting geopolitical currents, opponents argue they risk projecting a dependent image of Pakistan internationally.
With Haqqani and Tharoor’s interventions fuelling further commentary, the episode continues to prompt debate over whether Sharif’s praise is a calculated diplomatic move or political theatre. For now, the Sharif–Trump interaction remains a prominent talking point in regional diplomatic discourse.
