Shaqueel Van Persie Celebrates Senior Debut with Feyenoord at Just 19

Post by : Mara Rahim

At merely 19 years old, Shaqueel Van Persie, son of the renowned Robin Van Persie, proudly made his senior debut for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie. Shaqueel signed his initial professional contract in 2022 and was recently elevated to the first-team roster. Although he remained an unused substitute during an earlier loss to NEC Nijmegen, he seized the opportunity to play shortly thereafter.

His inaugural senior match occurred against Celtic, where he substituted for defender Jordan Lotomba in the 81st minute while Feyenoord trailed by two goals. Despite his limited time on the field, it marked a significant transition for the young player from youth leagues to professional football.

Robin Van Persie, not only the coach of Feyenoord but also Shaqueel's father, stated that the choice to bring him into the game was purely professional. “I made that decision as a coach, not as a father because we needed a goal,” he emphasized. He further noted Shaqueel's remarkable capability to score from various angles, which justified his inclusion. “He is adept at finding the net from all positions on the pitch, which influenced my decision to play him.”

Unfortunately, Shaqueel's debut didn’t sway the match’s outcome. Barely a minute after he entered, Celtic's Benjamin Nygren secured a third goal, ending Feyenoord's hopes. Nonetheless, Robin Van Persie acknowledged the significance of this moment for both his son and the team’s future. “For a father, your son making his debut is always a cherished memory. But I focused on my responsibilities just as Shaqueel did,” he remarked.

Shaqueel’s debut signals Feyenoord's trust in his talents and potential as an impacting forward in Dutch football. Trained under his father’s mentorship within Feyenoord's youth system, he is poised to grow and contribute to the team in forthcoming matches. Robin Van Persie highlighted that the emphasis remains on performance enhancement over personal accolades.

Feyenoord looks ahead to their upcoming Eredivisie bout against SC Telstar this Sunday. Shaqueel may receive more chances as the season evolves, with aspirations of integrating him completely into the first-team. Fans and analysts are keenly observing his adaptation to high-level football.

Shaqueel Van Persie’s senior debut is a pivotal moment for him and reflects Feyenoord's focus on developing young talent. Despite the setback against Celtic, this experience presents valuable insights for the promising 19-year-old. Guided by his father and the coaching staff, Shaqueel aims to be a significant player in future matches and possibly carve his own legacy, following his father's remarkable footsteps.
