Serena Williams has decisively quashed rumors regarding a return to professional tennis after her name unexpectedly surfaced in the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) anti-doping testing pool. The tennis star, who last played at the 2022 US Open, has been away from competitive play for over two years.
As per ITIA regulations, any athlete listed must provide daily whereabouts information and be accessible for random testing. The listing drew significant online chatter, with many enthusiasts interpreting it as a hint that the 44-year-old legend might be eyeing a comeback.
However, Williams quickly addressed the swirling speculation. In a post on X, she stated:
“Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.”
Questions remain regarding why her name reappeared in the testing pool, although her representatives have not yet provided an explanation. It’s important to note that ITIA policy stipulates any retired player wishing to compete again must undergo at least six months of out-of-competition testing before being eligible for official tournaments.
The talk of her potential return gained traction last week when Williams shared photos of herself on a tennis court with her younger daughter, Adira River, born in August 2023. These images reignited excitement within the tennis community, many of whom still wish to see the champion back in action.
Serena Williams officially retired from tennis in 2022, stating she was "evolving away from the sport" to concentrate on family and new pursuits. With a record 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she remains the most celebrated female player of the Open Era, having pursued a historic 24th Grand Slam to tie Margaret Court’s all-time record. After the birth of her first daughter, Olympia, in 2017, she reached four Grand Slam finals but fell short of adding another trophy to her illustrious career.
Despite ongoing enthusiasm from her fanbase, Williams has made it abundantly clear that a return is not in her future plans, effectively putting an end to this latest round of comeback chatter.
