South Korea and Taiwan Collaborate on U.S. Semiconductor Tariff Challenges

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

South Korea is considering a closer partnership with Taiwan as both countries deal with U.S. semiconductor tariffs, marking a significant instance of regional trade cooperation. The Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo emphasized the potential for collaboration to optimize treatment from the United States.

Recently, Seoul established an agreement with Washington that decreases tariffs on South Korean exports in return for considerable investments in vital U.S. industries. Taiwan, a key player in the semiconductor sector, is still in discussions regarding its own deal. Officials from South Korea maintain that the U.S. has ensured its terms with Seoul will be “no less favourable” compared to those offered to Taiwan, setting a standard for ongoing negotiations.

The imposition of U.S. semiconductor tariffs, a crucial aspect of the Trump administration's economic strategy, may now face postponements. Sources indicate that Washington might delay these measures, increasing the necessity for South Korea and Taiwan to synchronize their plans.

This development comes at a time of heightened demand for advanced semiconductors essential for artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. In October, South Korea saw its semiconductor exports to the U.S. soar by 51.2%, reaching $1.2 billion, reflecting the sector's escalating significance in trade negotiations.

While official communications between Seoul and Taipei have yet to be confirmed, analysts assert that joint strategies could influence the evolution of the semiconductor landscape in East Asia, creating a balance between competition and mutual strategic goals.
