Dhaka, Bangladesh: In a significant ruling on Monday, a court in Dhaka announced a seven-year prison sentence for Sheikh Rehana, the sister of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in connection with corruption related to the acquisition of prime plots in the capital. Her daughter, Tulip Siddiq, a British MP, has been sentenced to two years in prison as part of the same case, as confirmed by prosecutors.
Additionally, former Prime Minister Hasina and 14 other officials have received five-year sentences for their roles in this scandal. The 78-year-old Hasina has been residing in India since her ousting last year amidst a student-led protest, and it remains unclear where Rehana is currently located.
Case Overview
The Anti-Corruption Commission highlighted Siddiq's active lobbying for land allocations, where she allegedly pressured her aunt Hasina for plots for her family. Investigations uncovered that Siddiq used encrypted messages and direct meetings with Salahuddin Ahmed, her aunt's former principal secretary, to aid in the efforts.
Prosecutor Khan Mainul Hasan noted, “Tulip urged her aunt Sheikh Hasina to provide plots for her mother and siblings, while she herself received three plots—one for her and two for her children.”
Court Findings
Judge Rabiul Alam, referencing verses from the Holy Quran, asserted the court's authority to prosecute any Bangladeshi citizen, irrespective of their residency abroad. The interim government plans to inform British authorities of Siddiq's conviction officially.
Tulip Siddiq, who resigned as the UK's anti-corruption minister earlier this year due to related inquiries, has labeled the trial as a “persecution and a farce.” No immediate statements have been made by Rehana or their family.
Consequences
This ruling has amplified political tensions in Bangladesh, shedding light on the ongoing scrutiny facing former leaders and their families. Analysts indicate that the verdict may affect Bangladesh's diplomatic relations, especially considering Siddiq’s political position in the UK and Hasina's situation in India.
