Devastating Floods in Santa Cruz, Bolivia Result in 20 Fatalities

Post by : Mara Rahim

In a catastrophic turn of events, Bolivia is grappling with severe flooding in Santa Cruz, triggered by relentless rain. Officials report that the death toll has reached at least 20, with more than 20 individuals still unaccounted for. The unprecedented rainfall has caused rivers to overflow, wreaking havoc across homes and vital infrastructure. Search and rescue operations are currently underway.

Alfredo Troche, the Deputy Minister of Civil Defense, indicated that initial counts reported seven fatalities. However, as floodwaters recede, this number has sadly risen, and rescue teams aim to locate more missing persons. Santa Cruz has been declared a disaster zone in light of the extensive damage.

The flooding initiated late Friday when persistent downpours caused the Pirai River to overflow. El Torno municipality has been identified as particularly hard-hit, with many residents taken off guard as water inundated their neighborhoods.

Authorities have urgently evacuated dozens of families to safer locales, with approximately 600 families affected in El Torno alone. In Colpa Belgica, nearly 1,500 families faced destruction of their homes and agricultural land. A significant bridge collapse has exacerbated the situation by severing critical access routes to Warnes.

Emergency crews, local authorities, and rescue teams are tirelessly searching for those missing, while providing shelter, food, and medical assistance to displaced individuals. Troche noted that recovery efforts are hindered by destroyed infrastructure and adverse weather, but teams persist in reaching stranded communities.

Forecasts signal more rain in the days to come, prompting the Bolivian government to initiate emergency relocations for those in precarious zones. Plans for declaring a national emergency are also in motion to facilitate resource mobilization and long-term support for families battling this escalating crisis.
