In a thrilling match in Ahmedabad, Sanju Samson showcased his talent with a quick-fire 37 runs off just 22 balls against South Africa. His stellar performance casts doubt on the future of Shubman Gill’s vice-captaincy as the team prepares for the New Zealand series and the T20 World Cup. With Gill sidelined due to a toe injury sustained in Lucknow's practice session, Samson stepped up as an opener, solidifying his claim for a regular spot in the top order.
Shubman Gill, aged 26, had been named T20 vice-captain to cultivate him as a potential future leader, taking over from Suryakumar Yadav for the long haul. Nevertheless, his recent outings have fallen short of the dynamic style the Indian squad embraces. Gill has yet to reach a fifty since his re-entry into the T20 fold, and his strike rate has plummeted. Adjustments he made for Test cricket have negatively impacted his performance in T20 formats.
Samson saw his career trajectory hindered when Gill ascended to the vice-captain role, despite possessing stronger T20 credentials, including three centuries last season. He found himself batting lower in the order during the Asia Cup, leaving him feeling sidelined until Gill's injury provided him with an opportunity to shine.
Now, with his latest performance, Samson seems poised to secure a place alongside Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order. While unfortunate for Gill, this injury could act as a turning point for team management, which is grappling with underperforming players like captain Suryakumar Yadav. Samson’s ability to perform under pressure enhances India’s options as they gear up for crucial matches ahead.
