Sabalenka Prevails as Gauff Advances in Intensifying WTA Finals Race

Post by : Mina Rahman

Aryna Sabalenka moved nearer to a semi-final berth at the WTA Finals after claiming a consecutive victory in Group Steffi Graf. The powerful-baseline player, a four-time Grand Slam champion, combined aggression and resolve to maintain her position in the standings.

Sabalenka met Jessica Pegula, who remains mathematically alive in the semi-final race with a win already to her name. Reflecting on the encounter, Sabalenka commented, “Pegula is an incredible player. She pushed me to the limit. I stayed aggressive and looked for my chances.”

Early in the match Sabalenka broke Pegula to lead 4-2 in the opening set. Pegula recovered to pull level at 5-4 and survived three set points, yet Sabalenka ultimately closed the set by converting a decisive forehand break.

Pegula capitalised on Sabalenka’s 13 unforced errors in the second set, converting two breaks to move ahead 5-2 and fending off two break opportunities to force a third set.

In the decider Sabalenka was initially undone by double faults, gifting Pegula an early advantage. She steadied her game with accurate returns along the lines, produced two successive breaks to lead 4-2 and carried that edge to secure the victory.

Coco Gauff Eliminates Paolini

Coco Gauff delivered a composed performance to eliminate Italian qualifier Jasmine Paolini. After a match in which she committed 17 double faults versus Pegula, Gauff cut that number to three in this outing.

Gauff surged to a 3-0 lead in the first set; Paolini held serve for the first time after an extended rally, but Gauff’s angled, cross-court ball placement earned her a 6-3 opener.

Gauff’s tactic of forcing Paolini to cover court proved effective in the second set, where she produced consecutive breaks to go 5-2 and then finished the match with a strong service game. Paolini exited the tournament following two straight defeats.

On the win, Gauff said, “I knew today’s win was important. Losing would have meant I was out of the tournament.”
