A powerful car bomb killed a senior Russian army officer in southern Moscow on Monday, marking one of the most serious attacks on a high-ranking military figure inside Russia since the war in Ukraine began nearly four years ago. Russian investigators said they are looking into several possible explanations, including the involvement of Ukrainian special services.
The victim was Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian General Staff’s directorate for army operational training. According to Russia’s State Investigative Committee, the bomb exploded under his Kia Sorento vehicle as he was leaving a parking space early in the morning at around 6:55 a.m. local time.
Investigators said Sarvarov was badly injured in the blast and later died from his wounds. Video released by authorities showed the damaged vehicle at the scene, with one door blown off and clear signs of the explosion inside the car. Blood could be seen on the driver’s seat, highlighting the force of the attack.
Svetlana Petrenko, a spokesperson for the Investigative Committee, said police and forensic teams were working to collect evidence. Officers are questioning witnesses, examining bomb fragments, and reviewing footage from nearby security cameras. She said several possible motives are being considered, including a planned attack organized by Ukrainian intelligence.
Ukraine has not made any official statement on the incident. However, an unofficial Ukrainian website known as Myrotvorets, which lists people it describes as enemies or war criminals, updated its page on Sarvarov to state that he had been “liquidated.” The website has made similar claims in past cases involving Russian military figures.
This killing is part of a troubling pattern. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, several Russian military officers and well-known supporters of the war have been assassinated. Some of these attacks took place in Moscow or nearby regions, often using car bombs.
In previous incidents, Ukrainian military intelligence has openly claimed responsibility for certain attacks inside Russia. Among earlier victims were a senior General Staff officer, the head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Troops, and the daughter of a prominent Russian nationalist commentator.
The latest attack has once again raised serious questions about security in the Russian capital. According to Russian media, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said President Vladimir Putin was informed immediately after the explosion.
The killing of a general of Sarvarov’s rank is likely to increase tensions between Moscow and Kyiv even further. It also highlights how the conflict has moved far beyond the battlefield, reaching deep into Russia’s own cities and affecting senior figures at the heart of its military leadership.
As investigators continue their work, the incident is expected to have political and security consequences, both inside Russia and in the wider region, as the war shows no sign of coming to an end.
