Rare Rubens Painting Surfaces After Centuries, Fetches €2.3 Million

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a captivating turn of events, a remarkable artwork by Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens has re-emerged after lying dormant in obscurity for over four centuries, astonishing the art community. Recently discovered in a private residence in Paris, the painting achieved a stunning sale price of €2.3 million at an auction held in Versailles on Sunday.

The journey of this masterpiece began discreetly, initially undervalued and regarded as merely a workshop piece at around €10,000, until it attracted the discerning eye of auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osenat. The painting illustrates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and had been held within a French family collection, remaining hidden for generations. What appeared to be an ordinary artwork soon unfolded clues pointing to an extraordinary provenance.

Following rigorous scientific evaluation, the piece was confirmed as an authentic Rubens. Microscopic examinations revealed the artist’s distinctive technique, showcasing layers of white, red, black, along with delicate hints of blue and green pigments that brought the human form to life. These characteristics were consistent with Rubens’ methodologies from the early 1600s.

The painting's subject heightens its significance. While Rubens created numerous crucifixion depictions, this particular piece is defined by its brutally honest representation of Christ. It is thought to be the only known Rubens work capturing the moment blood and water pour from Christ’s side—a unique portrayal the artist never revisited.

Adding to its allure, the painting’s history is equally fascinating. After nearly vanishing in the 17th century, it reappeared in the 1800s as part of the collection belonging to famous French painter William Bouguereau, only to again slip back into private ownership.

Its recent revival sparked extraordinary enthusiasm among collectors and historians alike, culminating in a crowded auction room where the once-overlooked canvas commanded a multimillion-euro bid. Transitioning from a piece of modest worth to a significant art rediscovery, this painting's saga is one of the most remarkable in the art world in recent times.
