Rom Braslavski Claims Sexual Abuse During Gaza Imprisonment

Post by : Raina Nasser

Rom Braslavski, aged 21, was taken hostage from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023. In a shocking revelation, he has accused his captors of sexual violence throughout his two-year detainment in Gaza. This claim marks a significant moment as it is the first instance of a male hostage voicing such allegations, offering critical insight into the treatment of captives held by Palestinian militant organizations.

In a poignant interview with Channel 13's Hazinor program, Braslavski detailed harrowing experiences of humiliation, describing being stripped, bound, and subjected to what he termed “sexual violence aimed primarily at belittling me”. He shared the agony of regular beatings, stating, “Each day, with every strike, you silently pray for it to end. Surviving another day in that hell was all I could hope for.”

Braslavski was held by Islamic Jihad, a Palestinian militant group associated with Hamas, which engaged in cross-border assaults in October 2023. During his ordeal, militants circulated a video showing him in a skeletal and distressed state. He was eventually released on October 13, 2025, under a ceasefire agreement that also facilitated the release of 20 other hostages and roughly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.

An Islamic Jihad representative dismissed Braslavski's allegations, labeling them “incorrect” without further elaboration. Conversely, an Israeli government spokesperson characterized his testimony as “a living testament” to the grim realities faced by hostages under Gaza's militant factions.

While reports have previously highlighted sexual abuse against female captives, UN experts confirmed in March 2024 that some hostages in Gaza were victims of sexual violence. Hamas, which held the majority of hostages, has consistently refuted these claims.

Braslavski's brave sharing of his narrative illuminates the broader humanitarian fallout of the conflict, which has caused over 68,000 deaths during Israel's military operations and saw 251 individuals taken hostage by Palestinian militants in 2023. Rights institutions have documented abuses on both sides, including accusations of sexual violence within Israeli detention facilities.

The courage displayed by the former hostage in revealing his experience offers essential insights into the human ramifications of the conflict and emphasizes ongoing investigations into wartime abuses.
