Chief Justice John Roberts underscored the lasting strength of the U.S. Constitution in his annual correspondence to the judiciary on Wednesday. In a year clouded by judicial controversies, Roberts asserted that the nation’s founding documents remain “firm and unshaken,” a sentiment echoing a historic remark from President Calvin Coolidge.
This affirmation comes on the heels of rising worries in 2025 regarding a potential constitutional crisis, driven by tensions between supporters of Republican President Donald Trump and judicial rulings that challenged segments of his conservative agenda. In March, Roberts made headlines with a rare public rebuke after Trump demanded the impeachment of a judge who ruled unfavorably in a deportation case involving Venezuelan migrants.
Roberts’ letter remarked on the judicial system’s historical significance, recalling a landmark 19th-century ruling that underlined the principle shielding judges from removal due to unpopular verdicts. He encouraged judges to honor their oath by administering justice impartially, “doing equal right to the poor and to the rich,” while faithfully applying the Constitution and the laws of the United States.
Despite facing opposition in lower courts, the Trump administration secured around two dozen wins on the Supreme Court’s emergency docket last year. The court’s conservative majority has endorsed initiatives such as barring transgender individuals from military service, constraining federal spending sanctioned by Congress, promoting tighter immigration policies, and dismissing Senate-confirmed leaders of independent federal agencies.
Yet, the court also ruled against Trump in certain matters, including a crucial decision halting his attempts to deploy the National Guard to select U.S. cities.
Looking to the future, the Supreme Court is set to tackle significant cases in 2026, involving debates over Trump’s move to end birthright citizenship and the legality of his unilateral tariffs against multiple nations. Roberts’ letter largely sidestepped these contentious issues, instead opening with a homage to Thomas Paine’s 1776 pamphlet Common Sense and concluding with Coolidge’s urging to seek solace in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence during tumultuous political moments.
