Turkey Prices Soar as Avian Flu and Supply Issues Hit Thanksgiving

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

This Thanksgiving season, American households might experience a significant increase in turkey prices, reaching highs that haven't been observed in decades. While smaller farms like Old Brick Farm near Detroit remain unaffected by bird flu, the national turkey population has plummeted to a 40-year low, influencing both supply and pricing.

Impact of Disease on Flocks

Recent outbreaks of avian flu have led to the loss of over 2 million turkeys, while the avian metapneumovirus has hindered egg production. Farmers are urgently looking to secure hatchlings for the upcoming year amidst delays that may compound the holiday supply chain challenges.

Increase in Wholesale Turkey Prices

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, wholesale turkey prices could escalate by 44% this year. By mid-November, the average price for frozen hens weighing 8–16 pounds reached $1.77 per pound, marking an 81% increase from the previous year. With the rising costs of beef and other meats, consumer demand for turkey is intensifying.

Retail Strategies to Mitigate Costs

To draw in customers, retailers are marketing budget-friendly deals. Aldi and Kroger are offering complete Thanksgiving meals for around $50, whereas other stores are introducing discounts and promotions to alleviate price hikes. Nevertheless, tariffs on aluminum and steel increasing the costs of canned goods and weather-related declines in cranberry production are also pushing prices up.

Shopping Expectations This Holiday

A typical shopping basket of 11 Thanksgiving essentials now costs approximately $59, a 4% increase compared to last year. Although prices for certain items like pumpkin mix have decreased, cranberry sauce has surged by 38% due to drought and tariffs. Consumers are facing a mixed shopping experience: while turkey remains the festive centerpiece, the rest of their meal is costing more than they would have anticipated.

Challenges for Holiday Celebrations

Americans preparing for Thanksgiving are advised to shop early, seek out discounts, and brace for a tighter holiday budget. Although some farmers are maintaining healthy turkey flocks, the broader market reflects a reality of scarcity, rising prices, and necessary adjustments to traditional holiday festivities.
