Travelers Seek Clean Air as Pollution Rises in Indian Cities

Post by : Saif Nasser

As the year winds down, the desire for getaways intensifies, particularly in light of serious pollution issues in numerous Indian cities. The Air Quality Index frequently soars into alarming levels, making clean air a coveted luxury. Consequently, families are opting for “aircations,” a term that encapsulates trips to locations boasting clearer skies and an AQI conducive to relaxation.

Traditionally, Goa has been a favored choice during this season, but rising costs and overcrowding are leading many to explore alternatives. With steep flight prices and high hotel rates, travelers are now turning to budget-friendly destinations like Vietnam, where cities such as Saigon and Hanoi offer rich culture, gastronomy, and exploratory adventures. For those yearning for respite from urban bustle, idyllic beaches in Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Con Dao Island, or Ninh Van Bay present stunning vistas and a breath of fresh air.

Similarly, Thailand remains a beloved option for those desiring idyllic beaches and relaxation. While Bangkok is a familiar stop for many, tourists are gravitating towards tranquil locales like Phuket and Krabi, which offer easy access to serene beaches and outdoor activities. Travelers might also venture to Koh Samui or the tranquil mountains of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, where culinary delights and picturesque views are complemented by clean air, negating the need for air purifiers.

Sri Lanka stands out as a prime destination for visitors seeking a comprehensive experience. The island boasts pristine coastlines, untouched hill stations, expansive tea estates, historic temples, and refreshing, breathable air in every corner. Peaceful cities like Galle offer scenic escapes from the polluted environments characteristic of many Indian urban centers, particularly during the winter season.

For those in search of an even more serene experience, Bhutan is an enticing choice. The nation features a relaxed lifestyle, remarkably clean air, and breathtaking landscapes. Visitors can explore the capital Thimphu, marvel at the Punakha Dzong, trek to the iconic Tiger’s Nest monastery, or traverse high-altitude roads like Dochula and Chele La, indulging in the tranquility and splendor of nature.

Travelers wishing to remain in India can still find locations with fresh air across southern and northeastern regions. Hill stations like Ooty in Tamil Nadu and Wayanad in Kerala offer AQI levels below 20, allowing guests to enjoy the outdoors freely. The Northeast continues to impress with its cleanliness, with Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh providing excellent opportunities for hiking, rafting, and soaking up the clear skies—experiences increasingly hard to come by in the northern cities of India.

As air pollution levels continue to escalate each winter, the quest for clean air has become a top priority among travelers. No longer are they just pursuing beaches or mountains; they seek destinations that afford them worry-free breathing. The rise of “aircations” underscores the importance of air quality in contemporary travel planning.
