Renewable Energy Surpasses Global Electricity Demand in 2025

Post by : Shakul

In 2025, renewable energy sources outstripped global electricity demand growth, marking a significant achievement in the energy transition. A report by Ember highlights that clean energy generation expanded at a faster rate than the overall electricity demand for the first time in recorded history.

The findings show that renewable power generation surged by 887 terawatt hours, outpacing the global electricity demand increase of 849 terawatt hours. This remarkable growth is primarily attributed to the rapid deployment of solar energy in nations like China and India.

Together, renewables—including solar, wind, and hydropower—comprised over a third of global electricity production, achieving an all-time high of 33.8%. Meanwhile, coal’s contribution fell below that threshold, highlighting a gradual shift away from fossil fuels.

Solar energy was pivotal in this transformation, growing by 30% in 2025 and satisfying nearly three-quarters of the increased electricity demand. When paired with wind energy, renewables collectively met almost all of the year's additional demand.

China emerged as the leader in global solar capacity expansion, contributing over half of the worldwide growth. Additionally, India demonstrated impressive gains in both solar and wind energy, while also enhancing hydropower generation.

The report further noted a 46% increase in battery storage advancements due to significant cost reductions. This improvement enables solar energy utilization beyond daylight hours, enhancing overall efficiency and consistency.

Experts believe this trend indicates that renewable energy is capable of meeting the growing global demand while diminishing fossil fuel reliance. However, they caution that ongoing investment and supportive policies are crucial to maintain this progress and further reduce carbon emissions.
