The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched a federal lawsuit against Washington, DC, and its water utility, DC Water, due to a significant sewage spill into the Potomac River.
This legal action stems from the failure of a 72-inch Potomac Interceptor pipeline on January 19. The leak resulted in approximately 244 million gallons of untreated sewage flowing into the Potomac River near Montgomery County, Maryland, raising alarms regarding the region's aging infrastructure.
Constructed in the 1960s, the pipeline had been identified as being in disrepair. Repair activities were initiated by DC Water on a nearby section in September, later completing that work. However, the failed section was reported to be significantly corroded and had awaited urgent repairs for several years.
The DOJ's complaint asserts that DC Water neglected proper maintenance and operational oversight of its sewer system, leading to untreated sewage entering the river and jeopardizing public health and environmental safety.
Additionally, Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown has filed another lawsuit in Montgomery County Circuit Court, seeking penalties and damages for the environmental contamination.
Officials from the DOJ have emphasized that this incident underscores the necessity for city governments to invest in their aging wastewater systems to avert future environmental catastrophes.
In response to the incident, DC Water has indicated that it promptly halted all sewage discharge into the river within 21 days and completed the emergency repairs within 55 days. The agency also mentioned efforts to expedite repairs on over 2,700 feet of pipeline in the affected area.
The incident has sparked political fallout, with officials attributing blame to local and state leaders. Emergency declarations have been issued, and federal resources have been mobilized to manage the crisis.
Although the pipe has resumed operation following emergency repairs, ongoing restoration efforts continue, alongside continuous monitoring of the river's condition.
