4.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes the Bay of Bengal

Post by : Mara Rahim

On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 7:26 AM IST, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Bay of Bengal. Originating at a depth of 35 km, its coordinates were 20.56°N latitude and 92.31°E longitude, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). Thankfully, there have been no casualties or damage, prompting authorities to watch for potential aftershocks.

The Bay of Bengal is known for seismic activity related to the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates. While its moderate tremors are frequent, they are generally less threatening than in more active areas like the Pacific "Ring of Fire." The history of the region includes significant events, such as the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, emphasizing the ongoing need for careful monitoring.

According to the NCS, the earthquake's 35 km depth reduced any surface shaking, minimizing risk to coastal areas. They provided updates through social media channels like X (formerly Twitter) to keep communities informed and to mitigate panic. Recent seismic activity has included a 5.1 magnitude earthquake near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, none of which resulted in major damage.

Experts remind us that even minor earthquakes showcase the necessity of preparedness. Coastal residents should have emergency plans, while authorities are urged to ensure robust early warning systems and disaster-responsive infrastructure. Raising awareness around earthquake safety is crucial to safeguard lives and lessen potential risks.

This incident highlights the significance of diligent scientific monitoring and open communication regarding natural hazards. Providing accurate and timely insights helps alleviate public fear and encourages community preparedness. Residents should stay alert, adhere to safety guidelines, and ensure their structures can withstand seismic disruptions.

Though the recent earthquake in the Bay of Bengal was moderate and caused no harm, it serves as an important reminder of nature's unpredictability. Continued vigilance, scientific research, and preparedness are vital for safely coexisting with the seismic dangers in the region.
