Rama Duwaji: Gen Z First Lady and Creative Architect Behind Mamdani’s Campaign

Post by : Raina Nasser

Rama Duwaji, 28, has assumed the role of New York City’s first Gen Z First Lady after the election of her husband, Zohran Mamdani. Though she has largely remained out of the limelight, political observers and campaign insiders credit Duwaji with defining much of Mamdani’s online persona, producing campaign visuals and strengthening his social media outreach.

A Syrian-American illustrator, Duwaji arrived in the United States in 2021. She and Mamdani met via the dating app Hinge and formalised their relationship with an engagement in October 2024. The couple held a private nikah and engagement event on a Dubai rooftop later that year, followed by a courthouse ceremony in New York earlier this year.

Duwaji earned an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work frequently addresses sisterhood, Arab identity, collective resistance and civic themes; several pieces convey pro-Palestinian perspectives, including portrayals of violence and references to U.S. policy.

Based in Brooklyn, Duwaji also produces hand-illustrated ceramics, notably blue-and-white plates, and maintains a substantial online audience. Her Instagram account, approaching 235,000 followers, features her artwork, political commentary and selective personal updates, including moments with Mamdani.

As Mamdani prepares to take office as New York’s first Muslim mayor, analysts note that Duwaji’s dual role as creative strategist and supportive partner helped shape his public image and campaign momentum. Her presence as the city’s first Gen Z First Lady underscores a generational change in civic leadership and the expanding role of young creative professionals in politics.
