India mourns a cultural icon as Ram Sutar, the acclaimed sculptor behind the Statue of Unity, died late in the evening on December 17 at his residence in Noida. He was 100 years old and had been facing health challenges associated with aging.

The news of Sutar's passing has resonated deeply across the nation. His son, Anil Sutar, shared an official statement with the media, stating, “With heavy hearts, we announce that my father, Shri Ram Vanji Sutar, has departed from this world at our home around midnight on December 17.”

Details Surrounding Ram Sutar's Passing

Sutar passed away gently in his sleep at home. Family members noted that he had been in declining health for some time due to age-related complications, and while physicians monitored his condition, it gradually worsened.

His death signifies the conclusion of a long, impactful journey that has profoundly influenced Indian art and culture.

Early Life and Flourishing Artistic Journey

Born on February 19, 1925, in the small village of Gondur in Maharashtra's Dhule district, Sutar exhibited a passion for artistry and clay modeling from an early age. He delighted in crafting small figures with his hands as a child.

Despite humble beginnings, he dedicated himself to his craft, successfully enrolling at the prestigious JJ School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai, where he was awarded a gold medal, establishing his early prominence.

A Legacy of Iconic Sculptures

Throughout his illustrious career, Ram Sutar produced some of the nation's most noteworthy sculptures, prominently displayed in significant locations nationwide.

Two of his remarkable creations are situated within the Indian Parliament:

  • A serene statue of Mahatma Gandhi in a meditative pose

  • A dynamic equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

These statues are celebrated for their intricate details, emotional gravitas, and strong national significance.

Statue of Unity: His Crown Jewel

Among his most monumental achievements is the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, which honors Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.

Towering at 182 meters, it stands as the tallest statue globally, symbolizing the essence of modern India and drawing millions of visitors each year from both India and abroad.

His passing is a profound loss not only to the world of art but to the nation itself.

The Nation Remembers a Visionary

Across India, artists, dignitaries, and the general populace are reflecting on Ram Sutar's life marked by simplicity, strong principles, and considerable contributions to Indian culture. His masterpieces will narrate India's story for generations to come.

Though Ram Sutar may no longer be present, his artistic legacy will endure forever.
