Rajinikanth Unveils Aishwarya's Rejection of Iconic Padayappa Role

Post by : Mina Rahman

The celebrated 1999 film Padayappa, starring superstar Rajinikanth, is gearing up for a special theatrical re-release, much to the joy of fans anticipating the actor's birthday. In a recent video message, Rajinikanth reflected on the film's production and disclosed a captivating casting anecdote: Aishwarya Rai was originally his top choice for the fierce role of Neelambari.

He remarked, “Initially, we considered Aishwarya Rai for Neelambari. I was even willing to wait for 2–3 years for her, as we aimed for perfection. Unfortunately, she wasn’t keen on the project. We also thought about other actresses like Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. The character required a specific arrogance and intensity, which is why K.S. Ravikumar suggested Ramya Krishnan, who portrayed Neelambari with outstanding depth.”

Despite Aishwarya's rejection, she later appeared alongside Rajinikanth in Enthiran. Furthermore, Rajinikanth has confirmed a sequel entitled Neelambari: Padayappa 2.

Directed by K.S. Ravikumar, Padayappa featured a stellar cast including Ramya Krishnan, Soundarya, and Sivaji Ganesan, alongside Nassar, Lakshmi, Radha Ravi, Abbas, Sithara, and Preetha. The film achieved significant success, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of its era, and this re-release offers fans a renewed opportunity to experience its allure on the big screen.

Simultaneously, Rajinikanth and Ramya Krishnan are filming for Jailer 2, helmed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures. The film also features S.J. Suryah, Vinayakan, Yogi Babu, and Mirnaa, set for a release in June 2026.
