Two people died and more than 160 others were injured during the state funeral of Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga in Nairobi on Friday, according to Doctors Without Borders.
The incident took place at Nyayo National Stadium, where thousands gathered to pay their last respects. Witnesses said the tragedy began when mourners pushed forward to view Odinga’s body, leading to a deadly stampede.
Rescue teams from Kenya Red Cross and local hospitals rushed to the scene to help the injured. Many victims suffered fractures and breathing problems after being trapped in the crowd.
On Thursday, three other mourners were reported dead after police fired warning shots when people forced their way into Kasarani Stadium during a public viewing of Odinga’s body.
Raila Odinga, aged 80, was a major political figure in Kenya. He ran for president five times and served as Prime Minister in 2008. Known to supporters as “Baba”, he died earlier this week in India while receiving medical treatment.
Thousands attended Friday’s funeral, waving white handkerchiefs and chanting his name. President William Ruto and other national leaders were also present.
Odinga’s body will be taken to his home in western Kenya for burial on Sunday, where more mourners are expected to gather.
