In a remarkable display, French cyclist Benoît Cosnefroy clinched third place at the Amstel Gold Race, marking a significant achievement for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
The challenging 257km route from Maastricht to Valkenburg featured 33 steep climbs through the picturesque Limburg hills. The event commenced with high energy, as an early breakaway group quickly gained ground. However, the main peloton increased pace and eventually reeled in most of the escapees ahead of the concluding section.
The intensity peaked in the final 70 kilometers, particularly on climbs like Loorberg, Gulperberg, and Kruisberg. Noteworthy cyclists, including Remco Evenepoel and Mattias Skjelmose, managed to pull away from the rest of the pack.
The pivotal moment unfolded on the steep Keutenberg climb, where Evenepoel and Skjelmose forged ahead, creating an insurmountable gap. A gripping sprint ensued between the two for the finish.
Cosnefroy maintained focus within the groups behind, demonstrating tactical acumen despite minimal assistance, particularly as the race split further near the final ascent of Cauberg.
Ultimately, Evenepoel bested Skjelmose in the final sprint to clinch the title, while Cosnefroy's strategic ride earned him a commendable third, finishing just shy of two minutes behind the victors.
The Ardennes Classics continue, with La Flèche Wallonne set to take place next Wednesday.
